But in a small business, you are looking for 'patterns,' not 'proof.' If you talk to five people and they all have the same problem, you don't need to talk to five hundred more to know it's a real issue. You have already found a trend. The risk of being wrong with five people is significantly lower than the risk of being wrong with zero people. Also, remember that small businesses are agile. If you make a decision based on ten people and it turns out to be slightly off, you can change it tomorrow. Big corporations can't do that. They have to be sure because a mistake costs millions. For you, a mistake might cost a few hundred dollars and a week of time. So, don't let the fear of a small sample size stop you. The 'Rule of Five' is a great benchmark: if five diverse customers tell you the same thing, pay attention. It's almost certainly a pattern you can bank on.

Focus on the people who are actually walking through your door or visiting your website today. That is where the truth lies for your business.
